In his first speech in the German parliament as a chancellor, Friedrich Merz called for the West Union against Russian President Vladimir Putin. For Merz, strengthening European security is a “priority.” It was Merz’s first return to Bundestag after the fiasco of having to undergo a second vote to be confirmed Prime Minister.
In front of ministers and opposition, Merz emphasized the international relations of the European Union and Germany. The German newspaper Spiegel called him, after speaking to Parliament, a “Chancellor of Foreign Policy” and classified the speech as “warm.”
For the abroad, Merz said he will have a “without reservations” support to Ukraine in the war against Russia. He reinforced the importance of the work he classified as a “set” between Europeans and Americans to reach a ceasefire in the conflict.
Since last week, when he took office, Merz has visited France and Poland during the eighty -year celebrations of the Allies’ victory in World War II. He was also in Kiev with France’s prime ministers, Emmanuel Macron, and the United Kingdom Keir Stmerer, for conversations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about a truce.
At the time, the allies of Ukraine stated that if Putin does not accept a peace agreement in thirty days, Russia will be hit by new punishment measures.
This Wednesday (14), to parliamentarians, Merz asked union against the Russian.
“It is of paramount importance that the West does not allow to be divided and I will make every possible effort to continue to achieve the largest possible unit among our European and Americans partners,” he said.
The chancellor again insisted on strengthening the German Armed Forces. He said that making Germany’s army the strongest in Europe is a goal of the new government, which will increase defense investments.
“In the future, the German government will provide all the financial resources that Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) needs to become the most powerful army in Europe. This is more than appropriate for the most populous and economically powerful country in Europe,” the chancellor points out.
According to Merz, the goal is to “make Germany and Europe so strong to the point that we never need to use weapons.”
In internal politics, Merz dealt with Germany as “an immigration country” – but lamented an “uncontrolled” entrance of foreigners in the country in the last decade. Even so, he pointed out that unilateral measures will not be taken in this regard.
A certain distrust hung over Merz in this regard, especially after the politician approved a hardening of migratory laws with the support of the German Far Party Alternative to Germany (AFD) during legislative elections.
About the economy, the German leader said he seeks new tax incentives to stimulate growth – especially in the infrastructure sector.
