Messina Denaro, the letters of the woman who hosted him: “You manage to make other men become nothing”

Everyday, at lunch and dinner, the spouses Lorena Lanceri and Emanuele Bonafede reserved a seat at the table for the former boss Matteo Messina Denaro, in their home in Campobello. Yet, a few days after the fugitive was arrested, the two presented themselves to the carabinieri, saying that they had recognized Messina Denaro in the man who, a few months earlier, a relative had introduced to them as Francesco Salsi, a retired doctor.

Lorena Lanceri and Emanuele Bonafede, however, have now been arrested. To frame them and to confirm the complicity with the boss, a photo and a video. The image portrays Messina Denaro in their living room, with a cigar and a glass of cognac in hand (the head is not visible, but the boss has been recognized). In the video frames, recorded by a surveillance camera installed near a shop a few steps from their home, we see the spouses who, over several days, they carefully monitored the road so that no one could notice the illustrious guest’s movements who left their home and reached his Giulietta Alfa Romeo.

“It was, after all, one hospitality that undoubtedly had significant costs for a not particularly wealthy family,” it is written in the precautionary measure issued by the investigating judge. “Family which therefore it is completely unreasonable to think that it could have taken on the full maintenance of an unknown retired doctor”.

The letters of «Diletta» to the boss

Emanuele Bonafede is the cousin of Andrea Bonafede, the man arrested shortly after the capture of Matteo Messina Denaro for having given him his identity. His wife, Lorena Lanceri, was deeply attached to the former boss, as evidenced by some writings found by the Carabinieri del Ros, signed “Diletta”, the name by which the woman was called by the fugitive. «The beauty of my life was to meet you, as if fate decided to make it up to you by giving me a gift in grand style. That gift is you», reads a note from 2019, recovered from the home of Rosalia, Messina Denaro’s sister.

It’s still: “I think any woman, having you next to her, feels special, but above all you manage to make other men become nothing. With you I feel protected, you make me feel good, you make me smile with your jokes and I adore your irony and your immense knowledge and intelligence. Of course you also have many flaws, your stubborn precision… But whoever loves you also loves your being like this. You know, I love you and as I always say a good that comes from within. I hope that life gives you some serenity and I will do everything to help you». The message ends like this: «You are great even if you weren’t MD. Your Beloved».

The supporters arrested

With the Bonafede spouses, the number of people arrested for having covered up the fugitive rises to six of the boss: the surveyor Andrea Bonafede, who lent him his identity, the driver Giovanni Luppino, Andrea Bonafede brother of Emanuele, the surveyor’s namesake, accused of having sent hundreds of health prescriptions to Messina Denaro and Alfonso Tumbarello, the doctor who treated him for two years during his fugitive by registering drugs and prescriptions in the name of Bonafede.
