Messina Denaro, the third hideout, the confiscated papers, the expenses (including a 700 euro dinner)

Campobello di Mazara was really the “home” of Matteo Messina Denaro: the investigators have found his third hideout. A other residence of the boss.

It is an apartment in via San Giovanni, on the first floor of a building, with a garage, rented by a man from Campobello, but who has lived in Switzerland for forty years. The police discovered the third hideout thanks to the testimony of whoever organized the move and who, from the images seen on television, recognized Messina Denaro. However, the apartment is empty: would be for sale.

The investigators are trying to understand when the former boss arrived at his last home, who the intermediaries were and what identity he used (probably he already used the name of Andrea Bonafede, with whom he had operated in November 2020).

To trace the trafficking managed by Messina Denaro, the public prosecutor’s office led by Maurizio De Lucia is looking for clues in the papers seized in the hideouts: the note on which, after his arrest, Messina Denaro wrote that the carabinieri had treated him will be used for the calligraphic reports well and with respect. In addition to the agenda with his personal notes (where he also spoke of the non-existent relationship with his daughter), Messina Denaro compiled post-its, loose sheets, notes and memos collected in folders with names, nicknames and acronyms. Cards with the references of the network that covered him in his thirty years on the run, but also entrepreneurial issues, business, racketeering.

There are also very detailed expense reports, which reveal a very high standard of living: according to initial estimates, the fugitive’s monthly expenses were around 10,000 euros a month. It also turns out to be a 700 euro dinner, in which the boss probably paid the bill for all the diners. However, the money has so far not been found. Messina Denaro had an ATM connected to the postal current account officially registered to the real Andrea Bonafede, and now the investigators will analyze every movement. Cash, however, is not traceable.

Meanwhile, the investigating judge of Palermo has validated the arrest in flagrante delicto of Giovanni Luppino, the olive trader who was driving the car in which Messina Denaro reached the Maddalena clinic, where he was being treated. Prosecutor Piero Padova, in the request for pre-trial detention in prison for Luppino, wrote: «No element can allow the state to believe that a figure who has literally managed to spend about 30 years on the run undisturbedsurrounded herself by figures unaware of the tasks performed and the connected risks, and indeed, the incredible duration of this fugitive militates in a decidedly opposite sense, leading to believe that the extreme trust and bond welded with the figures of her own supporters has somehow contributed to the procrastination of the time of his capture which, otherwise, could actually have occurred even in more recent times».

Luppino, on the other hand, defends himself: «I didn’t know it was Matteo Messina Denaro, only a madman could have accompanied him knowing that he was the boss», and continues to maintain that the boss had been introduced to him as Andrea Bonafede’s brother-in-law.
