A planned suicide. Matteo Messina Denaro wanted to impose his control also on death and, to his sister Rosetta, arrested in recent days, he had written it in clear letters, on May 10 last year: «I won’t die of cancer, as soon as I can’t take it anymore I’ll kill myself at home and you will find me. I’ll tell you when the time comes.” To conclude his earthly existence, the former boss could have used the Smith & Wesson pistol that he kept in the apartment hideout in Campobello di Mazara.
In the same pizzino, the former boss had also written: «I understood, even if I already knew it, that I have an amazing, enviable willpower. I don’t walk with the body, I walk with willpower. I will stop as soon as I die, not before».
The disease, however, has upset his plans, forcing him to come out: the 13 November 2020 Messina Denaro had to undergo an operation surgery and started a course of chemotherapy. In mid-2021 he underwent a second operation.
It was the newspaper Republic to reveal the content of this pizzino, one of almost a thousand found by the carabinieri del Ros between the apartment in Campobello di Mazara and the country house where Messina Denaro’s sister, designated as his executor, went from time to time.
In the prison of L’Aquila, where he is serving his sentence, the former fugitive is being watched continuouslyday and night, also precisely because of these statements of his: the intent is to prevent that announced suicide, taking advantage of the absence of surveillance personnel.
Messina Denaro had planned to die while on the run, just like his father Francesco didprobably died of a heart attack. The police found him on December 1, 1998, lying on the ground, in the countryside of Mazara del Vallo, with his hands joined and an elegant suit, complete with a tie.
