Met Gala, let’s dust off the forgotten looks of the 80s and 90s

Before social media and live streams, the Met Gala wasn’t quite the star-studded blinding megawatt event it is today. In fact, we have to wait until the end of the 90s, if not the turn of the millennium, for sparkles and flashes at full blast. Only then the most important event of the fashion system started boasting the A-list celebs we know well and are known for today.

If it all began in 1948 when, first baptized as Costume Institute Galawas born as a party charity to support and raise funds for the Costume Institute, it was only in 1973 with the advent of Diane Vreeland which began to turn into a legendary party and then acquired new fashionable vigor in 1995, when Anna Wintour begins to chair the organizing committee and have decision-making power on the guest list. For decades, the theme of the exhibition has also served as a dress code and of amazing looks over time we remember many.

In the 80s and 90s, however, the theme was not so binding, although even these decades we have had their fair share of really amazing clothes. So much so that you browse old photos of celebs of the period dressed up it turns into a pleasant and curious journey into memory. And with only a handful of days left until the 2022 edition glamorous evening, there’s no better time than now to rewind the ribbon and bring back forgotten looks.

Like the monochromatic pair in shades of caramel and cream Jennifer Lopez and P. Diddy (then Puff Daddy) in 1999, which represents their only appearance at the Met as lovers. Or when Kim Cattrall channeled Samantha Jones with her see-through outfit in 1997. And, back to the previous decade, the sequined animalier dress worn with a multi-strand pearl choker in 1981 by Raquel Welch or the sparkling golden look complete with chain and oversized hoop earrings sported by Iman the same year.

For an instant nostalgia effect then browse the gallery and take some time to walk along the boulevard of memories and see the best looks of the Met Gala, perhaps a little forgotten today, from the 80s and 90s.
