THE Goal company of Mark Zuckerberg and owner of Facebook announced the Orion your first pair of augmented reality glasses this Wednesday (25). The news was shared at Meta Connect 2024, an event in which other news was also announced by the company.
Previously called Project Nazareth, Orion was first announced as a new device in development by the company five years ago. Last September, the tech giant also launched the Ray-Ban Meta, smart glasses that eliminate the need for a wearable camera.
Now, according to the company, the new pair of glasses called Orion will combine the benefits of a large holographic display and personalized AI assistance in a comfortable format that can be worn all day. According to Meta, the launch is what they believe to be “the most advanced pair of augmented reality glasses ever produced”.
What will be possible to do with Orion, Meta’s augmented reality glasses?
The company says the new device will enable digital experiences that aren’t limited by the confines of a smartphone screen. With large holographic displays, it will be possible to use the physical world as a canvas, placing 2D and 3D content and experiences wherever the user chooses.
Additionally, the glasses feature contextual AI that detects and understands the world around them to anticipate and meet the user’s needs. According to Meta, the device is lightweight and can be used indoors and outdoors, allowing people to see the face of the user wearing the Orion.
At approximately 70 degrees, Orion has the largest field of view in the smallest form factor of an AR headset to date. Instead of glass, the lenses of the headset are made of silicon carbide — a new component for AR headsets.

Among the features, the technology company highlights the possibility of making a hands-free video call anywhere to talk to friends and family in real time, in addition to the possibility of viewing and sending messages.
Additionally, it was also mentioned that users will be able to play shared augmented reality games with family on the other side of the country or with a friend on the other side of the couch. And the Orion’s large screen will allow users to use multiple windows to perform different tasks without having to carry a laptop.
Despite the announcement, the Orion does not yet have a release date. This is because two obstacles still prevent the pair of glasses from reaching consumers. At the event, Meta pointed out what they are: the technological advances needed to provide a large screen in a compact glasses format and the need for useful and attractive augmented reality experiences that can be run on the new glasses.
