Tribute to the late Charlie Watts, legendary Rolling Stones drummer, who died at the age of 80 this week, praised Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, praising him as “an important part of the Stones’ sound and an underrated part of their sound”.
Speaking at Rolling Stone, Lars Ulrich said he was shocked by the death of Charlie Watts, noting that “he was deeply hurt on many levels” because “as a Stones fan he considers it to be the end of at least one season for this band, as he was the only drummer who ever recorded with them”.
Lars Ulrich pointed out that Charlie Watts often did not get the attention they needed as the Stones drummer, following a strictly professional approach to his role in the band, while Mick Jagger and Keith Richards enjoyed being in the spotlight.
“When in the band, the spotlight was on Mick and Keith, many people did not really understand how valuable he was,” he said, according to the Athens News Agency.
Lars Ulrich also spoke about the way in which Watts inspired and encouraged him as a drummer and stressed that he was the key influence in much of his work. Metallica including “Black Album”, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.
“Charlie has always been that driving force. Seeing him like that in his 70s confirmed life,” he said.
The Metallica drummer stressed he always saw them Rolling Stones as inspiration, for how they continued to evolve and enjoy a career of many decades.
“They do not need money or publicity, so one can imagine the reason why they continued to exist, because they love what they do,” he said.
“They made me believe in the possibilities that can continue to exist – music, concerts, connecting with fans, connecting between us as a band. “There is no one above them in this pyramid and there is no one above Charlie in this pyramid.”
