Meteorologist explains what caused “cloud waterfall” in Minas Gerais

Several users on social networks shared records of a large cluster of clouds in the Serra do Curral region, near Belo Horizonte, earlier this week.

Popularly, the phenomenon was called “cloud waterfall”, due to the optical effect caused. But CNN, meteorologist Francisco de Assis explained that the term is not technical.

The climate consultant said that, in fact, they are clouds of orographic origin. “It is a cluster of clouds with an orographic effect, mountain clouds. This time it was a strong upswing of the winds that carry moisture and formed this big cluster of clouds on top of the mountain.”

The term “orography” is associated with the study of relief. In meteorology, the concept is important, because the relief can directly influence the circulation of winds or the incidence of sunlight in a location, for example.

In the case of the event recorded this week in Minas Gerias, according to Assis, the intensity was due to the temperature difference between the air masses that circulated in the place.
