Mevlüt Tsavousoglou: The only occupation in Cyprus took place in 1963

The only occupation in Cyprus took place in 1963, claimed the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Tsavousoglu, saying that since then the United Nations peacekeeping force has been stationed on the island.

Speaking via teleconference at a UN Ministerial meeting on peacekeeping co-organized by the South Korean Foreign and Defense Ministries, the Turkish minister said, according to the Cyprus News Agency, that the success of peacekeeping activities by the United Nations needs everyone’s agreement, and the same goes for Cyprus.

He added that the former Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, also mentioned it in his speech on the Cyprus issue. “I want to emphasize that for the activities of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus, the UN must also receive the approval of the Turkish Cypriot side. I want to remind you that the only occupation on the island took place in 1963, “This paved the way for the establishment of a UN peacekeeping force on the island in 1964,” said the Turkish Foreign Minister.
