Tiktok is a fertile ground for diffusion of beauty tips and techniques. There, users flood the platform with instructions – home or not – on how to improve the look or optimize complex processes.
Mewing is one of the virals of the Chinese app, for example. It is a practice that promises to define the jaw, end the double and double chin, prepare the look for the perfect selfie and even align your teeth.
The technique was called Ortotropy and was developed in the 1970s by British orthodontist Jonh Mew and sought to guide the growth of the face until it reached the desired format. Videos indicate that young people should position their tongue in the sky of the mouth and press the region as they keep their teeth backrest and closed lips as an exercise.
What are the risks of Mewing?
In an interview with the CNN dental surgeon Ianara Pinho warns of the risks of practice, which can even harm health, causing complications and pain. According to her, after maxilla growth ends, which happens in early adolescence, it is only possible to modify the jaws with specific appliances or surgeries.
“Mewing has no scientific proof and, if done incorrectly, can generate problems in the ATM (mandible joint), facial pain and even bend their teeth.
The recommendation is to look for an orthodontic specialist to check the possibilities for improved jaws, ”said the dentist.
“During childhood and early adolescence, this maxilla growth happens naturally, regardless of mewing. After this period, to modify the jaws you need to resort to devices or orthognathic surgery.”
