Maya Martínez Vázquez is the Mexican girl who has just raised the name of her country after winning first place in the XXV International Children’s Painting Contest. This event is organized by the Atami Museum of Arts (MOA), in Japan, and each year attracts more than 500 thousand participants around the world. The objective of this contest is to promote creativity, ideas, thoughts and emotions of children through art.
This year’s theme asked the contestants to represent nature. Maya found the idea attractive and with the help of her parents she entered the contest. The little girl was inspired by Tláloc, the rain god of several pre-Hispanic peoples, to make a drawing whose colors made the Japanese country sigh.
The god Tlaloc was on his side
Maya, originally from Monterrey, Mexico, lives in a small ejido and has been in contact with nature for most of her life. His mother is a teacher and his father is a lover of Mexican history, which has helped him to be in touch with his ancestral roots.
When she found out about the XXV International Children’s Painting Contest, her eyes shone with excitement, she immediately let her parents know that she wanted to be part of the project and was inspired by the god of rain, Tlaloc. The result was a beautiful work of art in shades of blue, yellow and green that capture the attention of any viewer.
His art is a cry of love and hope
The main objective of the contest was to represent nature and, according to the Japanese judges, Maya did it perfectly, using the correct colors, the perfect symbology and giving an explanation that no one could refute.
My drawing represents life and since Tláloc is the god of water for the Aztecs, I wanted to use it and connect it with various elements of nature, such as the leaves of trees, since other living beings need this element to live.

In the end, Maya turned out to be the first place winner out of nearly half a million children who entered the contest. She traveled with her parents to Japan to be awarded and her work will be exhibited at the Atami Museum of Arts for a whole month. This highlights his talent and the name of his country.
