Mexican mayor is killed days after taking office; local media talks about beheading

The mayor of the Mexican municipality of Chilpancingo, Alejandro Arcos, was assassinated on Sunday (6), six days after starting his term. According to the local press, the politician, who came to power saying he would act against violence, was found decapitated inside a vehicle.

The murder of the mayor, who took office on October 1st, comes three days after the general secretary of the same municipality, Francisco Tapia, was shot to death last Friday (4).

At the time, Mayor Arcos told a radio station that he believed that his security and that of his team should be reinforced.

Photos circulated on social media show a body covered with a blanket inside a vehicle and a human head, believed to be that of the mayor, on the hood of the car. Authorities, however, have not publicly confirmed the circumstances of Arcos’ death.

The Guerrero state attorney general’s office said, in a statement, that it began investigating the crime of qualified homicide, sending police officers and experts to the scene.

At a press conference, the new Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, classified the murder as a “regrettable episode” and stated that the case is being investigated to determine the motive for the crime.

According to her, authorities are evaluating whether there is a need to transfer investigations from the state to the national level.
