Eleven people were killed in an exchange of fire during an unlicensed horse race in Chihuahua, northern Mexico, the state government announced on Monday.
Five victims were killed on the spot. The rest succumbed to their injuries in hospitals where they were treated, said Hilberto Logia, a state official in charge of public safety.
The exchange of fire in the village of El Saous, which belongs to the municipality of Chihuahua, was due to the “clash between two gangs”, Mr. Logia explained.
Chihuahua, a state bordering the United States, part of the most widely used drug trafficking route, has been plagued by an extremely violent wave of violence for fifteen years. In the first three months of 2022 alone, 411 people were killed, according to authorities.
In February, at least nine people were killed in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, during the funeral of a man who had been killed a few days earlier.
