The governor of Sinaloa, Mexico, announced today that the body found midweek is that of missing radio host Candida Cristal Vazquez.
Police found the woman’s body Thursday in a canal in the Pacific resort of Mazatlan.
The mayor of the city, Luis Guillermo Benitez Torres, told reporters today that the results of the laboratory tests are awaited to confirm the identity of the victim, but “everything indicates that it is her”.
Vaska’s family had reported her disappearance to the authorities at the end of July. With her death, the presenter is added to the long list of murdered journalists in Mexico. This year is already the bloodiest on record for the Mexican press. On Monday, columnist Freddie “Freddy” Roman was murdered in Guerrero State. According to the human rights group Article 19, at least 18 other journalists have been killed since the beginning of the year.
