A new caravan of about 300 immigrants, citizens of most of the states of Central America and Haiti, departed from Tapatsula (Chiapas state, southern Mexico) to USA, found a correspondent of the French Agency.
Immigrants from El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, as well as some from Haiti and Venezuela, some with children in their hands, others with suitcases and water bottles, began to walk along the coastal road that connects Tapatsula with Masatan.
“I came with them because in my country they are threatening to kill me,” explained Darwin, a young man from Honduras. “I hope to find a job there,” he said, referring to the United States.
This is the fourth caravan to leave for the United States last week, despite the presence of members of the National Guard and the Mexican Immigration Service, who are trying to prevent immigrants from reaching the border.
Activists and UN staff members accompanying the migrants complain that the Mexican authorities are using excessive force.
The immigration service was forced to make available two of its employees who hit an immigrant.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Thursday he had written a letter to US counterpart Joe Biden reminding him of the need to address the root causes of Central American immigration.
AMLO has repeatedly proposed extending an aid program to Central American states to create 1.2 million jobs in the region. It has also been suggested that those who participate in this program for three years be allowed to obtain a work permit in the US.
It also invites immigrants who wish to stay in southern Mexico.
Mexican authorities arrested dozens of Central American immigrants this week, including children, who were trying to walk to the United States in hopes of escaping poverty and violence.
The Mexico has seen a sharp rise in immigrant arrivals north since Joe Biden took office in the United States, promising a more humane immigration policy.
US Vice President Kamala Harris has also stressed the need to address the causes of immigration, which she reiterated when she visited Mexico in June, but warned that it would take time.
Mexican authorities have deployed more than 27,500 members of its armed forces to the country’s northern and southern borders to deal with the rising tide of immigration.
