Every year, tens of thousands Immigrants from Central American countries and other Latin American countries are trying to reach the US, to escape the violence and misery in their homelands.
But as they cross Mexico, many fall victim to crime or blackmail, while others die in accidents.
The deadliest such accident took place in December, when a truck with a trailer carrying 160 migrants overturned in the state of Chiapas, killing 56 of them.
On Monday, a “caravan” of thousands of undocumented immigrants left the Mexican city of Tapatsula (Chiapas, south) to reach the United States.
Four days later, the Mexican government began handing out documents to hundreds of them guaranteeing that they could stay in the country for 30 days without fear of deportation.
The “caravans” of immigrants crossing Mexico had caused great tensions with the US during the presidency of Republican Donald Trump (2017-2021).
Since then, Mexico has tightened controls on its southern border and in 2021 307,679 migrants were arrested.
