Almost a quarter of its population Mexico (126 million) are estimated to have been or were infected with the new coronavirus, the health ministry said, in other words more than ten times the laboratory-confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2.
The National Institutes of Health and Nutrition Survey (ENSANUT) found that approximately 31.1 million people in Mexico have been infected with the virus, the ministry said, citing Tonati Barrientos Gutierrez, a National Institutes of Public Health official.
This estimate was made public on the day 3,282 cases and another 243 deaths of patients with coronavirus, with the official toll of the coronavirus pandemic in the country of 126 million inhabitants reaching 229,823 dead so far out of a total of 2,448,820 infections.
Ministry of Health officials have repeatedly stressed during the health crisis that they believe that the numbers of both deaths and cases are much higher than those confirmed.
According to Barrientos Gutierrez, many of the people infected were asymptomatic.
The survey was based on interviews with individuals belonging to 13,910 households from August 17 to November 14, 2020.
Data on excess mortality released by the Ministry of Health in March showed that COVID-19 deaths were at least 60% higher than confirmed.
