A caravan of several hundred migrants, marching from southern to northern Mexico since October 23, reached an agreement with the Mexican authorities on Thursday, after several tensions with the security forces during their journey.
The immigrants negotiated with representatives of the Mexican Ministry of Interior, who promised them that they would “inventory” the special situation of each and would deal “in due time” with each case.
A total of 17 people, including 13 police officers, were injured Sunday night during the arrival of migrants in the capital in incidents with security forces, local authorities said.
Two Cuban migrants were killed in the south of the country in late October by National Guard fire. They were members of the caravan, according to its organizers, something that the authorities did not confirm. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has demanded that those responsible for the deaths be brought to justice.
The migrants had left the border with Guatemala.
The seven-point agreement envisions the creation of a “list of caravan members”, with “priority given to children”, according to a statement from the Interior Ministry. Immigrants will be asked to indicate whether they wish to stay in Mexico or simply cross its territory to seek asylum in the United States.
On January 17, the authorities will set up a “standing committee” to study the situation of migrants.
The deal put an end to the caravan, said one of its leaders, Irineo Mujica, a Mexican who has made very harsh statements against his country’s authorities.
In late November, the government issued 2,500 humanitarian visas to another convoy.
Immigrants crossing from Mexico to reach the United States have been organized in caravans for years to protect themselves from authorities, gangs of thugs and traffickers.
Others, who also try to reach the US, pay large sums of money to traffickers for a trip that is often made in inhumane and dangerous conditions.
On December 9, 56 migrants, most of them from neighboring Guatemala, were killed when the truck they were loaded on overturned in Chiapas.
An immigrant said he learned that the traffickers had asked them to pay $ 13,000 each to take them from Guatemala to Houston (Texas, southern USA), according to a report in the Spanish newspaper El PaÃs.
Mexico has recorded a record influx of immigrants this year, 190,000 people between January and September, three times as many as in 2020, as the United States continues to pursue a strict immigration policy.
