The bodies of 10 people were found in the state of Sakateka, in central Mexico, today, nine of whom were hanging from a bridge, in a series of murders, which apparently are related to the rivalry between gangs, according to local officials.
The tenth body was found on a nearby highway, according to a state Department of Public Safety official, who did not want to be named. The bodies were found in the town of Quautemok, the local government said in a press release.
The killings may be linked to a dispute between criminal gangs operating in the area, according to the official. Research is ongoing.
Violence related to gang activity in some parts of Mexico has increased recently, including in the popular tourist areas of the state of Quintana Roo.
Yesterday, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said National Guard troops would be deployed permanently to Cancun and its environs following the escalation of violence, including the deaths of two tourists trapped in the Tulum resort.
As of September, 21,495 people had been killed this year in gang-related violence, an average of about 2,400 a month, according to the government.
