Mexico’s government said on Tuesday (18) that it had signed an agreement with Switzerland to protect its interests in Ecuador, more than two months after the two Latin American countries severed relations following a raid by Ecuadorian police on the Mexican embassy. Mexico in Quito.
Since the highly unusual event in April, in which Ecuadorian police and soldiers entered the compound to arrest Ecuador’s former vice president Jorge Glas, who had been given refuge at the embassy since December, the two nations have abruptly severed diplomatic relations.
The dramatic nighttime raid saw heavily armed security agents scale the embassy walls to arrest Glas, who was wanted on corruption charges even though Mexico had granted him asylum a day earlier.
Under the agreement announced on Tuesday, Switzerland will “protect, represent and exercise” Mexican diplomatic and consular activities in Ecuador, according to a statement from the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The statement emphasized that the agreement does not include any request to mediate differences between the two countries arising from the invasion.
The ministry added that Mexico will not consider reestablishing ties with the government of Ecuador until it offers a “public and unconditional apology at the highest level” as well as committing to respect the right to asylum protections.
