Mexico: Entire cities refuse to be vaccinated against coronavirus

Indigenous communities in Mexico clarify that they do not trust the federal government of the country and state that “they will not be vaccinated against coronavirus”, reports the CNN.

For the president of Mexico, vaccination of citizens is a matter of a responsible public health policy and Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador emphasizes that “Vaccines are available in small quantities”, but there were already indications that not all Mexicans want to be vaccinated.

In Aldama, a small town of about 7,000 people in the highlands of the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, some residents say will not be vaccinated. Indigenous communities, such as Aldama, have a lack of confidence in the federal government, according to CNN.

The leaders of these communities claim that the government is ignoring them, that their land has been stolen, denouncing discrimination, ill-treatment and attacks. This time the lack of information and conspiracy theories spread in the area are responsible for the vaccine wariness. This component, along with well-known conspiracy theories, has prompted local officials to proudly report that there has not been a single case of coronavirus in the city. Speaking to CNN, the mayor of the city attributed this fact “to traditional medicines”.

According to CNN, Aldama is not the only city in southern Mexico where its residents refuse to be vaccinated. In February, the mayor of San Juan Kankuk, another autonomous city of 24,000 in the central Chiapas highlands, wrote a letter to the central government announcing a decision by the municipality to refuse vaccinations.
