Mexico: Four killed in exchange of fire between gang members and police near the US border

A car chase and an exchange of gunfire between members of a gang and law enforcement forces near its northern border Mexico As a result, three members of the powerful Gulf Cartel and a passer-by were killed, officials said.

The incident started on Friday night in the border town of Matamoros, when Army members and police tried to stop a number of suspected vehicles., officials in the northern state of Tamaulipa said in a statement.

Gang members fired against the security forces, set up 15 blocks across the city and set many cars on fire. Some escaped on foot to the center of Matamoros.

This was the second such incident in Matamoros in less than a week. Last Sunday, videos on social media showed a series of cars speeding through city streets and gunshots being heard.

From 2019 to March this year, Matamoros is home to a vast settlement of immigrants who have been ordered to stay in Mexico while waiting for their US asylum applications to be processed, according to a policy – known from the title Migrant Protection. Protocols (MPP) – of the administration of former US President Donald Trump.

The controversial program has been strongly criticized by immigrant supporters as it sends asylum seekers to border towns plagued by crime, such as Matamoros, and stays there for a long time until their applications are considered.

US President Joe Biden has tried to end the program, but his government is currently taking steps to comply with a court ruling that would keep the policy in place until mid-November.
