Gunmen raided a night club in Heres, a city in the central-north Mexico, in the heart of an area swept by drug cartel violence, local authorities announced yesterday Sunday. Eight people were murdered.
Heavily armed men opened fire in the early hours of Saturday inside the nightclub, in Sacatecas state, about 670 kilometers north of the capital, according to the same imgs. Six people died on the spot, two others succumbed to their injuries while receiving medical attention. Among the victims are musicians, customers and employees of the nightclub, local media reported. Five other people with bullet wounds were being treated in hospitals yesterday.
Cartel war
The violence in Sakatekas forced hundreds of citizens to flee last year. It is mainly attributed to the clash of the two strongest cartel of the country, the so-called Nea Genia cartel of Jalisco and the cartel of the state of Sinaloa.
In March 2022, the two organizations clashed over control of a village that had been abandoned by its residents, before it was retaken by security forces.
Since 2006, when the so-called “war on drugs” was declared, with the involvement of the military, more than 340,000 murders have been recorded in Mexico, mainly attributed to gangs.
One of the architects of this “war”, former Security Minister Genaro García Luna, is currently on trial in New York, as he was allegedly an accomplice of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán’s Sinaloa cartel.
