Locating 209 immigrantsincluding 25 unaccompanied minors, inside an abandoned truck in the southeastern state of Veracruz, in the Gulf of of MexicoMexican authorities announced.
The country’s immigration service (INM) clarified that they were found on Wednesday night in the community of Nuevo Teapa, on the side of the road that connects the cities of Villahermosa and Coatzacoalcos. The National Guard and the National Institute of Immigration said members opened the trailer door when they heard screams and found adults and children huddled inside.
At least one of the rescued people had symptoms of suffocation and was taken to a hospital, where he is recovering.
Most of the immigrants are Guatemalan nationalsthe rest are mainly citizens of Honduras, El Salvador and Ecuador, INM said.
Two weeks ago, 40 migrants died and 30 others were injured at a migrant detention center in northern Mexico, on the border with the US. Authorities are investigating a “serial homicide.”
In 2022, more than 50 migrants were found dead inside the truck trailer that had been abandoned in the heat in the suburbs of San Antonio, Texas, USA.
