Mexico: Photojournalist killed in Tijuana, news webmaster in Veracruz

A photojournalist who received death threats was killed Monday in Tijuana, northwestern Mexico, while a collective body demanded that the prosecutor begin an investigation into the murder of another journalist in Veracruz (southeast) on January 10th.

A contributor to several Mexican media outlets, photojournalist Margarito Martinez was shot dead in front of his home in Tijuana, a city on the border with the United States, according to the local Department of Homeland Security in Baja California.

The photojournalist, who specializes in police reporting, became “the target of a gun attack,” according to the same source.

Martines, 49, had received threats from bloggers, according to Mexican NGO YoSiSoyPeriodista (“I’m a journalist”), who called on authorities to take action to protect workers in the press.

The Attorney General’s Office announced that it had launched an investigation into the murder, stressing that “freedom of expression, in all its forms, is a fundamental right of citizens.”

In Veracruz, the State Commission for the Protection of Journalists asked the Attorney General to implement a “protocol for the investigation of crimes against freedom of expression” following the assassination of Jose Luis Gaboa, using a knife, on January 10, in the port of Veracruz. . His body was not identified until January 14 by his family.

The victim was not working as a journalist as an analyst, according to a local source in Veracruz.

He did not receive any “attacks” or “threats” from what is known, according to the state Committee for the Protection of Journalists.

Mexico is considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists, who are often at risk of retaliation from drug cartels, which ravage many of the 32 Mexican states.

At least seven journalists were killed in 2021, according to the French Agency, which is trying in such cases to determine whether the victim was still practicing the profession and whether he was killed because of his investigations or articles.

Some 100 journalists have been killed in Mexico since 2000, according to figures from the Commission on Human Rights.
