United States President Donald Trump signed a list of executive actions to crack down on immigration. This includes the designation of drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, a distinction that could precede the use of military force on Mexican soil.
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, said this Friday (24) that this classification “will not help”.
She added, however, that the Mexican government is preparing for the possible judicialization of the measure.
Sheinbaum pointed out that a team of lawyers is available to analyze possible economic impacts of Trump’s decree, issued on the first day of his new term – including on groups with no links to organized crime.
“We don’t think this will help, but what would help is collaboration and joint coordination,” Sheinbaum said.
Designating cartels as foreign terrorist organizations can also lead to harsher financial penalties and legal ramifications in the U.S. against those involved.
Experts argue this could harm the relationship between the US and Mexico.
