Mexico shields borders to stem US migration flows

The Mexican government has deployed more than 8,700 troops along its northern border to prevent illegal immigration to the United States. as crossings increase rapidly, announced yesterday Monday the Minister of Defense.

Soldiers and members of the National Guard have been deployed to 347 checkpoints along roads known to migrants, Mexican Defense Minister Luis Crescenzio Santoval said.

Due to the increase in migration flows, mainly from the countries of the selected northern triangle of Central America (Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador), the Mexican government announced last night that it will exercise stricter controls.

The land borders are also closed to all trips that are not absolutely necessary, in order to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus pandemic.

Under pressure from former US President Donald Trump, Mexico had already deployed troops at the border to prevent immigrants from crossing illegally by June 2019.

Thousands of migrants flocked to the two countries’ borders following the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the presidential election, as well as the new president promised to pursue a more “humane” policy on the immigration issue. Most are trying to escape the misery, endemic violence and impact of the two catastrophic cyclones that struck Central America last year.

US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mallorca acknowledges that a large increase in the number of refugees and immigrants is expected, that Migration flows in the near future may prove to be the largest in the last twenty years.

Just over 14,000 unaccompanied refugee and immigrant minors are currently being held by U.S. authorities, according to officials.
