A statue of its president stood for just two days Mexico, Manuel Lopez Obrador, in one of the strongholds of the opposition, as the prosecutor confirmed that he was a victim of vandalism.
The unveiling of the statue was made on Thursday by the outgoing mayor of Atlacomulco, Roberto Tei Monroe. This is the birthplace of Enrique Pena Nieto, who was succeeded by Lopez Obrador in the presidency of Mexico.
Lopez Obrador’s National Renaissance Movement (MORENA) ruled the municipality until recently, before returning to the control of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which had long been at the forefront there.
“The statue was demolished”, said a spokesman for the prosecution. “It was apparently an act of vandalism”, he added.
In order to start conducting an investigation into the case, the prosecution needs a complaint, which – as the representative underlined – has not been filed yet.
Photos posted on social media show the decapitated statue lying on the ground.
Lopez Obrador remains popular in Mexico, with a popularity of 64.3%, according to a poll by the Mitovsky Institute published on Saturday.
The Atlakomulco municipal authority did not comment on the incident.
In the past, Lopez Obrador had stated that he did not agree with the erection of monuments representing him.
