Mexico: Suspension bridge collapses during inauguration, more than 20 injured

The inauguration ceremony turned into a fiasco: more than 20 people were injured yesterday Tuesday when a suspension footbridge collapsed in Cuernavaca, central Mexico.

The injured include Mayor Jose Luis Uriostegi, his wife Luc Maria Chagall, guests and residents gathered for the inauguration ceremony of the suspension bridge.

The accident was transmitted almost in real time via social networking sites: video recorded the guests falling from a height of almost two meters, as the wooden floor of the footbridge collapsed.

“We have at least 25 injured,” Samuel Sotelo, a local official, told Milenio. “Two were admitted to hospital with serious injuries,” he said.
