Mexico is shocked by the killing, according to all indications, of an 18-year-old girl who was found dead after her disappearance in the northern part of the country, where the almost daily kidnappings and murders rarely provoke such anger.
The body of 18-year-old Debany Escobar, who went missing on April 9, was found in a hotel water tank in the Monterrey district. Thus was written the tragic epilogue of a disappearance that received unusually high publicity, with the girl’s father in the front line denouncing the failure of the investigations.
“My daughter is dead due to incapacity (…) and perpetrators of sexual crimes,” he told reporters, disputing a version according to which his daughter slipped into the tank, and asking for the “culprits” to be found.
Feminist organizations took to the streets of Monterrey, demanding justice. “For Debany, for all. Not one more,” they wrote on the wall of the local prosecutor’s office.
President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador expressed his sorrow over the death of the young woman, wishing to shed light on the case.
Amnesty International has called on Mexican authorities not to let the young woman’s death go unpunished. The Mexican authorities are responsible for “deficiencies that endanger women’s right to a life free of all forms of violence,” the group added.
The young woman was last seen on the side of the road after getting out of a taxi, having obviously found herself in a difficult position due to the driver’s behavior.
The case is emblematic of the growing number of women disappearing in the state of Nuevo Leon (327 this year alone). The country records an average of 10 female homicides a day, according to official figures.
