The Mexican authorities announced the arrest of three people as part of their investigation into him murder of journalist Lourdes Maldonado. Her death last month in Tijuanain the northwestern part of the country, on the border with USAsparked a wave of outrage, protests inside the country and announcements of condemnation internationally.
The three alleged perpetrators of the journalist’s murder – after which mass mobilizations were organized with the central demand of the Mexican government to work for the better protection of workers in the media – were arrested yesterday Tuesday (8/2) and yesterday Wednesday (9/2) in Tijuanasaid the Minister of Security, Rosa Isela Roντstripeswithout naming them.
The Undersecretary of Security, Ricardo Mechiastated that the motive of the crime remains unknown, adding that he hopes that the investigations will allow the case to be clarified.
She was afraid for her life
Installed in Tijuana since the 1990s, the television reporter Lourdes Maldonado had requested in 2019 protection directly from the President of the Republic, IfdManuel Lopez Obradoremphasizing that “she was afraid for her life”.
She was then in conflict with her former employer, the television network Primer Notification System (PSN) of Haime Bonillaformer governor in Baja California (2019-2021) and a strong man of the party MORENA of the president in the state. She is one of four journalists killed in Mexico already in 2022, according to the non-governmental organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
