Mexican authorities proceeded to exhume 31 bodies from two mass graves, the public prosecutors announced yesterday Thursday. “We have counted 31 victims,” Jalisco state prosecutor Luis Joaquin Mendes told the press, adding that authorities have information that allows them to identify about half of them, to be handed over to their families.
The first secret tomb was discovered on February 1 at the San Isidro Massatepec site in the municipality of Tlachomulco de Zuñiga. After days of searching and digging up body bags, a second one was found. The state of Jalisco, whose sectors are controlled by the powerful Nea Genia tou Jalisco (KNGH) cartel, is among those hardest hit by the wave of organized crime violence, APE-MPE reports, citing information from AFP.
In 2022, 301 bodies were found in 41 secret mass graves, compared to 544 in 2020, where a tragic record was set.
