Mexico’s president says he is unaware of the presence of Russian agents in the country

Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Friday that his government has no information about any Russian agents based in the country, following comments by a US general.

On Thursday, General Glen VanHerck told a Senate hearing that “most members of the GRU (Russia’s Central Intelligence Department) are in Mexico right now, Russian intelligence officials who would be keeping an eye on in opportunities for influence and access to the US”.

López Obrador replied: “We have no information about this and we do not prevent any foreigner who wants to carry out legal activities in the country from doing so. “It is a declaration, we will not question anything, we respect the free expression of ideas, Mexico is a free, independent and sovereign country, it must be known because sometimes it seems that it is not understood enough. Send them telegrams informing them that Mexico is not a colony of any foreign country,” he said.

“We have a policy of non-intervention, we are not going to Moscow to spy on anyone, not Beijing, not Washington, not even Los Angeles, we are not involved in that,” added the Mexican president.

THE CNN requested comments from the Russian Embassy in Mexico, but has not yet received a response.
