The former US deputy, Mia Love, the first black woman elected to Congress as a republican, died after a fight against brain cancer, a family announcement on Sunday night.
Love, 49, represented the 4th UTAH Congressional District from 2015 to 2019.
“With grateful hearts overflowing with Mia’s deep influence on our lives, we want you to know that she died in peace today,” wrote the Love Family on Mia’s account X account.
“She was at home surrounded by her family. In the midst of a celebration of her life and an avalanche of happy memories, Mia silently slid the tracks of mortality and, as her words and vision have always done, flew to heaven. We are grateful for the many good votes, prayers and condolences,” he added.
Utah’s governor Spencer Cox called Love “a true pioneer and visionary leader” in a post about his death.
“Abby and I are heartbroken for the death of our dear friend Mia Love. A true pioneer and visionary leader, Mia inspired numerous inhabitants of Utah through her courage, grace and unshakable belief on the American dream. Your legacy leaves a positive and lasting impact on our state.
In May, Love appeared in “The Lead With Jake Tapper” CNN, to explain its 2022 diagnosis with cerebral glioblastoma cancer. People diagnosed with the condition are usually only a year and a half to two years of life, with only 10% chance of survival after five years, according to MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Love told Tapper that he began to receive immunotherapy every three weeks since August 2023 as part of a clinical trial at Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University.
She discussed her hopeful perspective, despite her 10-15 -month -old prognosis – which she surpassed – and how her Mormon faith helped her to persevere.
“I was looking for a cure in my faith and science,” she said. “The funny thing is that my patriarchal blessing said you will have a long and prosperous life, a rich and rewarding life as long as you decide to remain in the public service.”
After leaving Congress, Love later joined the CNN As a political commentator and was invited on the “The View” of ABC.
