Miami building collapses: 79 killed – More than 60 missing

The sad count continues at FloridaAuthorities announced on Friday afternoon that they had found another body, with the still provisional death toll reaching 79 dead, while giving a “small miracle” to a family suffering a little joy: its domestic cat was found alive, after 16 days.

The mayor of the county Miami-Dade, Daniela Levine Cava, announced during a press conference the retrieval of a new victim, the 15th in the day.

Of the 79 victims, 53 have been identified so far, while 61 people remain missing in the wreckage. of a collapsed building.

Ms. Levine Kava, however, noted that she was able to announce “good news”, that is, that it was a “small miracle” that “could offer some relief to a suffering family”.

The short-haired Binx cat was found not far from the wreckage of the Champlain Towers South alive, two weeks after the disaster. He was handed over to his family.

The latter – the Gonzalez – was inside the building when it collapsed. The mother, Angela, and daughter, Deven, were injured as they were leaving. The father, Edgar, is missing.

Mother and daughter confirmed that the cat found was theirs.

Although they had hoped for two weeks that they would be able to find tenants still alive in oxygen pockets in the rubble mass that turned the former 12-storey apartment building, Rescue crews finally decided to end the search and rescue phase on Wednesday and move on to the corpse collection. The search for the victims continued yesterday.

Surfside Mayor Charles Berkett hailed the “incredible progress” that research teams have made at the site, where they work 24 hours a day.

They are now looking below the ground.

“We found victims more or less everywhere” in the wreckage, said Miami-Dade County Fire Chief Alan Kominski.

Survivors’ searches were focused on stairwells, where tenants could have been trapped as they tried to get out, and in the bedrooms, based on the floor plans of the architectural plan of the floors, he explained.

Most of the apartment building collapsed, for a still largely unexplained reason, on the night of June 24th.

What remained of the apartment building was demolished in a controlled manner on Sunday night, as his instability posed a danger to the lives of members of rescue teams. The teams were then able to continue the search in previously inaccessible places.
