Michael B. Jordan It is Ben Affleck participated in the “Directors on Directors” section of “Variety” magazine and spoke about the lack of black directors in the film industry.
“It’s a weight to bear, (…) because there aren’t enough black directors, so it puts it on you, I believe and what I see with basketball players, for example, that I’m going to mean something to people. You’re going to do things that few people have done and become this symbol,” Affleck began.
“It is a reality. (…) Representation is extremely important and we don’t have that in certain areas”, replied B. Jordan.
“People aren’t approaching me for ‘oh, you’re famous’, it’s more ‘this role meant something to me’, ‘this project meant something to me’, so I’m impacting people, not in a superficial context, but in how they think and feel”, he added.
Michael B. Jordan also told what motivated him to go behind the camera and direct “Creed III”, franchise from the same universe as “Rocky” in which he stars.
“See Ryan [Coogle, diretor de “Creed” I e II] handling the set, the confidence he had. One day she turned to, ‘Mike, you should start directing. I don’t wait for the right moment. You can. You’ve been on a set your whole life.’ So it planted a seed,” she said.
“Over time, another element was circumstances. After ‘Creed II,’ I knew Ryan wasn’t coming back for the third film and I was trying to figure out who was going to direct me in the film. At that moment, I knew the character more than anyone, I know the franchise. So who is going to play this person? I looked around and, well, I think it’s me,” he concluded.
During the conversation, Ben Affleck also talked about his experience directing and his latest work, “Air: The Story Behind the Logo” starring Matt Damon his longtime friend.
Asked what it was like directing Best Friend, Affleck said it was “comfortable.”
“It’s someone you’ve known for so long and something we hadn’t done before. Throughout our friendship, we wrote together, performed together. It was very comfortable and easy,” she said.
Affleck and Damon previously worked together on “Indomitable Genius “ , “Code of honor” , “The Last Duel” and more.
