The actor Michael Keaton (“Beetlejuice”) said he doesn’t remember where his stage name came from and that he preferred to use his real name, Michael Douglas.
“I tried to remember, I think it was in a phone book. I don’t know, maybe it was like, ‘I’ll think about it,’ and this name came to me. ‘That sounded reasonable,’ I thought,” he said.
The statement was given in an interview with People magazine published this Thursday (5).
The 72-year-old actor explained that he needed an alternative in Hollywood, as another Oscar-winning actor, Kirk Douglas’ son Michael Douglas, already used the name.
Hollywood’s Screen Actors Guild prohibits two actors from using the same name. And although the name has “caught on,” the actor revealed that he would like to start using “Michael Keaton Douglas.”
He also said he planned to make the change in “Knox Goes Away.” However, in the rush to make the film, he forgot to ask for the change. “I forgot to give them enough time to include it. But it will happen.”
His latest starring project, the sequel “Beetlejuice” (which opened Thursday), has his name listed as “Michael Keaton.”
