O Michelin Guide present in Brazil since 2015, sent, this Friday (22), a note to the press in which it states that the crisis in Covid-19 brought to the restaurant sector, its partners and the entire gastronomic chain, “unprecedented challenges”.
Given this scenario, according to the statement, the work of the guide’s team of inspectors, which “recognises and values the quality and richness of the Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo gastronomic scene”, was “profoundly impacted”, as well as their financial and operational capabilities.
According to them, the inspectors’ job to fairly evaluate the restaurants in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo was made impossible.
The moment makes it difficult to “respect the Michelin Guide’s core commitments – expertise, independence and consistency – as well as its historical methodology”. It has also prevented the publication from “fully playing its role as a tourist, cultural and economic promoter in Brazil”.
For this reason, the Michelin Guide has taken the decision to temporarily suspend the update of its selection of restaurants in Brazil.
However, selected Brazilian establishments will continue to be promoted with their distinctions on the Guia digital platforms – website and apps.
In them, readers will be informed that these recommendations are based on previous visits made by the inspection team, bearing the following mention: “Last update: September 2020”.
