Michelin-starred restaurant catches fire in the UK

A Michelin-starred restaurant in northern England, housed in a 14th-century building, suffered significant damage after its thatched roof caught fire.

The Star Inn in Harome caught fire at 10:13 pm local time on Wednesday (24), according to the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The restaurant, located in the village of Harome in North Yorkshire, posted about the incident on social media.

“We are devastated to announce that there was a fire in our restaurant and pub that burned overnight,” the restaurant wrote in a Facebook post, adding that “luckily no one was hurt”.

The team also posted on Twitter.

“It’s been a long night so far…I’m afraid we won’t open for a while as we’re reduced to ashes,” says a tweet, which includes a short video of firefighters working to control the flames.

Firefighters from the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service used nine fire trucks, an aerial ladder platform and other equipment to fight the blaze, according to a statement.

“The fire in the thatched roof of the building caused extensive damage to the roof and roof space,” the newspaper said.

“The teams worked hard to prevent the fire from spreading across the thatched roof, meaning that one end of the roof and the ground floor were saved from the fire.”

The service confirmed that all occupants were off the property when the teams arrived. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Owner Andrew Pern told BBC Radio York that the property “didn’t really stand a chance” when the fire broke out. “It means a lot,” Pern said of the building, fighting back tears. Pern said it will likely take about a year before the main dining room can be reopened.

The Star Inn at Harome sits on the edge of North York Moors National Park. It was awarded a Michelin star, which praised the restaurant’s “luxury and luxurious feel” combined with a “bar with personality” that looks like a local pub.

“This is a place that proudly defends its home county,” says the guide, praising chef Steve Smith’s ability to use local ingredients “to create rich, bold and flavorful dishes with a classic base and modern twists.”
