Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index falls to 59.4 in March (final) vs. flash estimate of 59.7

According to the final version of the University of Michigan consumer opinion survey for March, the main index of consumer sentiment fell to 59.4 points against the preliminary estimate published at the beginning of the month of 59.7. This marks a substantial drop compared to February’s final estimate of the consumer sentiment index of 62.8 and marks weakest reading since August 2011.

The final version of current conditions index was revised down to 67.2 from the flash estimate of 67.8, also down from February’s reading of 68.2 and marking the lowest number since August 2011.

The final version of consumer expectations index reached 54.3 against the preliminary estimate of 54.4, well below the February reading of 59.4 and marking lowest reading since October 2011.

The one-year inflation expectations index also rose to its highest level since November 1981, at 5.4%.
