British photographer Mick Rock died this Thursday (18th) at the age of 72. In the artist’s Instagram note, he is described as a “photographic poet – a true force of nature who spent his days doing exactly what he loved, always in his own deliciously outrageous way”. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mick Rock was responsible for clicking images that translated the musical effervescence of the 1970s. The cover photos of the albums “Transformer” (1972) by Lou Reed, “Queen I”I (1973) by Queen and “I Love Rock’n Joan Jett’s ‘Roll” (1981) stand out among more than 100 covers photographed by Rock.
He was also the official photographer for artist David Bowie at the same time and directed several of his clips such as “John, I’m Only Dancing” and “Life on Mars”. His portfolio also includes photos of Iggy Pop, Syd Barrett, Queen, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Blondie, Joan Jett, Talking Heads and Mötley Crüe. Mick Rock was director of photography on the films “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” (1975), “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” (2001) and “Shortbus” (2006).
Born in London and living in New York for over 30 years, Mick Rock has continued to photograph and, in his most recent projects, has recorded artists such as Snoop Dogg, Father John Misty, Lenny Kravitz, The Black Keys, Ellie Goulding, Alicia Keys, Michael Buble, Daft Punk, Flaming Lips, Kings of Leon and Queens of The Stone Age.
