Microcars in the past: Smart has released an electric five-seater crossover

On Thursday, April 7, the smart brand made an announcement that opened a new chapter in its history. Smart, which three years ago became part of a joint venture between Germany’s Daimler and China’s Geely, has abandoned the combustion-engine cars and compact models that once made it popular. Now the brand will produce full-size electric cars. The first one was announced yesterday.

The new model, dubbed smart #1, is a five-seat electric crossover that will seriously compete with the second-generation Mini Countryman. In terms of size, the novelty is also comparable to a competitor – 4270 mm long, 1822 mm wide and 1636 mm high. In the top configuration rely on 19-inch wheels.

The new smart crossover is built on the SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) modular platform developed by Geely. The car has a rear-wheel drive and is driven by an electric motor with a capacity of 272 hp. and 343 Nm of torque. But in the future, the manufacturer promises to expand the list of available modifications.

Behind the autonomy of smart #1 is a 66 kWh lithium-ion battery. Its charge, as stated, is enough for 420-440 km of run. The charging power is 22 kW from the AC charger and 150 kW from the DC platform. The maximum speed that the new model can reach is 180 km/h.

The salon is designed for 5 passengers and looks quite modern. Here is a 9.2-inch screen that replaces the classic “wells” of the dashboard, and a 12.8-inch multimedia system monitor, and panoramic roof windows, and even a 13-speaker Bose audio system and interior contour lighting. There are 7 airbags and adaptive cruise control.

Smart #1 will be assembled in China at Geely’s production facilities. In Europe, pre-orders for the new crossover will start in September, and deliveries will begin by the end of the year. Prices are being kept under wraps for now.
