Microsoft has released another update for its Edge browser, which introduces Child Mode with parental controls. It helps keep children safe from unsafe content by restricting their internet access to approved sites only. The new mode is available in Microsoft Edge for Windows and macOS and can be turned on in your profile settings.
For kids mode, you don’t need to create a separate account, so synchronization won’t work in this case. It provides for two age categories – for children from 5 to 8 years old, as well as adolescents from 9 to 12 years old. Both provide the highest level of protection against tracking and collection of data about browser activity. When activated, Bing’s stricter and safer search is used, filtering content and blocking adult content from search results. In the 9-12 year olds category, there is a news feed with carefully curated news and articles from MSN for kids, covering topics such as science, animals, fun facts, and more. To switch to normal mode, you will need to enter the login and password from the system.
Microsoft has whitelisted 70 popular children’s sites, but adults can add other sites to the whitelist if they see fit. If a child tries to go to a site that is not on this list, he will see a block page, where he will be asked to either go to another site or request permission from an adult.
Windows keyboard shortcuts don’t work in child mode to bypass restrictions, but macOS doesn’t. But there are customizable themes, including Disney and Pixar with familiar cartoon characters. Microsoft believes this should encourage children to spend more time on the Internet.
