Microsoft has cut long-term support for Windows 10 in half – from ten to five years

Microsoft has changed the Windows 10 Enterprise Terms of Service for Windows 10 Enterprise with Long Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) support.

Microsoft has cut long-term support for Windows 10 in half - from ten to five years

Starting with the release of Windows 10 21H2 this fall, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC will only be supported for five years. For comparison, the current support period for such versions is ten years.

Previously, Microsoft executives tried to dissuade customers from using LTSC versions as a way to avoid regular functional updates of the OS. Representatives emphasized that Windows LTSC versions are intended for mission-critical systems that cannot or should not receive regular updates and do not have a regular network connection.

In a new post, Microsoft explained its move to cut support time in half by saying that many customers who have installed versions of LTSC on employee PCs “found they didn’t need a full 10-year lifecycle.”

For those customers who really need all ten years of support, Microsoft recommends looking at Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC, which will be released in the second half of 2021.

Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2015, 2016, and 2019 users should not be harmed by Microsoft’s decision. For them, support will last for all the previously promised 10 years – 5 years of the main one and another five years security updates will be released.
