In fact, this is Microsoft’s new attempt to compete with Google with its Chrome OS and low-cost Chromebooks for the education sector.

The company previously tried using S-mode, which essentially blocked Windows 10 for apps downloaded from outside the Microsoft Store. The limitation was more annoying for end users and educational institutions as there were not enough apps in the Microsoft Store.

Windows 11 SE takes a different approach. Microsoft moved in this direction with Windows 10X before canceling this version of the OS.

Windows 11 SE will only be available preinstalled on low-cost devices and only for educational institutions. Windows 11 SE is optimized for Microsoft Edge, Office, and Microsoft cloud services, but it’s not just limited to Microsoft apps.

Paige Johnson, Microsoft’s head of education marketing, explained:

Windows 11 SE also supports third-party apps, including Zoom and Chrome, because we want to empower schools to use what works best for them. ”

Interestingly, there will be no Microsoft Store on these laptops, but administrators will be able to install any Universal Windows Platform (UWP) or even Win32 apps.

Other limitations – apps always run in full screen mode, and multiple Snap Layouts have been canceled in favor of a single mode where apps are laid out side by side. The new Windows 11 Widgets section has also been removed from SE because Microsoft found it to be a distraction in the classroom.

Microsoft Edge is configured to support Chrome extensions, which is disabled by default on Windows 11. It is noted that many schools in the United States rely on Chrome extensions for Chrome OS.

Windows 11 SE laptops are expected to arrive in the coming months from manufacturers such as Acer, Asus, Dell, Dynabook, Fujitsu, HP, JK-IP, Lenovo and Positivo.
