The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued a patent to Microsoft Technology Licensing for “a registry-independent service for creating and processing tokens on distributed ledger networks.”
Patented computer system
proposes to users a number of “token templates”, each of which is mapped to a physical or digital asset. The Token Service is registry independent and is designed to act as a single interface for managing the lifecycle of tokens across multiple blockchains.
This will allow developers to write code for transactions and token management “in a way that is independent of the underlying platform distributed ledger.” Examples of such platforms in the patent application included: the main Ethereum blockchain platform backed by IBM Hyperledger Fabric; JPMorgan’s Quorum enterprise blockchain platform; R3 Corda and Chain Core.
According to the patent description, the described system “makes development more efficient for new business scenarios that require crossing registry boundaries.” Thus, the technology is mostly intended for use in enterprise blockchains.
Microsoft is actively working on blockchain-based software and technology improvements, introducing a large number of solutions related to cryptocurrency trading and wired intellectual property. For a long time, Microsoft has partnered with Consensys, a company that develops applications on Ethereum.
Last year, the corporation filed a patent for a system that allows mining cryptocurrency based on information about exercise (fitness mining).
