Microsoft has unveiled an updated Unicode emoji font. The new emoji are more voluminous and more saturated in color, in line with the Fluent Design style.
The character Skrepysh is used as an emoji clip. On July 14, the company on Twitter promised Replace the paperclip emoji with Skrepysh if the tweet gets 20,000 likes. As a result, the number of likes exceeded 100 thousand.
Skrepysh is a character of the Office Assistant feature, which appeared in Microsoft Office 97 and was intended to help novice users, but was criticized because of its intrusiveness. The character was drawn by children’s book illustrator Kevan Atteberry on a Mac. The feature was disabled by default in Office XP and has been completely removed in Office 2007 and Office 2008 for Mac.
In 2019, animated stickers with a clip appeared in the Microsoft Teams messenger, but they were removed after a few days. At the beginning of July, the Microsoft 365 team released a selection of backgrounds for Teams, including those with Skrepish.
The updated emoji font will start appearing in Microsoft 365 products within a few months. It will first appear on Flipgrid, Windows and Teams over the New Year holidays. Yammer, Outlook, and other Microsoft Office applications are also coming soon with new emojis.
