Microsoft to release universal Office app for Windows 10 that combines Word and Excel

In the Office 365 Partner Admin Center, Microsoft has announced an upcoming major update to its universal Office app for Windows 10. The software giant has already merged Word, Excel, and PowerPoint into a single app for iOS and Android. There is also such an application for Windows 10, but at the moment it is practically non-functional and only serves to organize the latest documents.

The Universal Office app for Windows 10 does not do any of the things that Office Editor should have. The only thing this program does is to launch the corresponding application when you click on the document, and if it does not exist, it redirects to the browser to the online version of Office. An upcoming update will allow you to open documents directly in the Office application, while the PWA version of Word or Excel will be hosted directly in this application. In the first phase, users will probably only be able to open files for reading. As soon as they go into edit mode, the app will automatically redirect them to the browser. But that too should change over time.

A universal application will still differ in functionality from a full-fledged Office (both offline and online), but for most users this will be enough. Microsoft promises performance improvements when working with documents to the level of a locally installed program. In addition, it will be possible to open several instances of the application at once, which is very important for working with several documents at the same time.

The new features in the Office app for Windows 10 are expected to arrive this June.
