Middle East: China criticizes US stance on Security Council

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi today lamented that the United States is “blocking” the adoption by the United Nations Security Council of a statement calling for an end to hostilities between Israelis and Palestinians, during the extraordinary meeting of this body.

“The Security Council must take action,” he said, noting that China (along with Norway and Tunisia) had been initiating a draft text for a week. “Because of obstruction by one country, the Security Council has not been able to speak with one voice,” the Chinese diplomat said, urging Washington to “assume its responsibilities” to the UN.

Today’s meeting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the third – and first public – meeting of the Security Council since last Monday, organized on the initiative of China, Norway and Tunisia.

During the first two meetings last Monday and Wednesday, the United States, in isolation, opposed, according to diplomats, the adoption of a Security Council statement expressing disapproval and concern for civilian casualties. end hostilities and confirm the plan for a two-state solution, Israel and Palestine, based on UN resolutions.

The Security Council, which is responsible for world peace, is the only body that has not taken a formal position on the conflict. Today, negotiations continued on a text, but the United States continued to be reluctant, diplomats who asked not to be named told AFP.

Washington has so far stressed the need to give time to behind-the-scenes diplomacy to achieve a ceasefire and considers a Council statement to be “counterproductive”, a position which is not understood by a majority of Council members, especially among traditional allies of the United States.
