Middle East: Israeli army goes on the offensive, Jenin on alert

After two deadly attacks in two weeks in Tel Aviv, Palestinians from the Jenin area, Israeli soldiers carried out a series of operations in the occupied West Bank on Sunday, killing two Palestinians in different incidents.

Israeli forces, who restricted access to Jenin over the weekend, said they had seized weapons stolen from Israel and arrested about 20 people during operations in which dozens were injured, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

The situation remained tense in Jenin last night, according to local authorities, who said on Saturday, during an Israeli army operation, gunshots were heard and there was one dead, a fighter of the Islamic Jihad organization.

For its part, the Israeli army reported that it opened fire on a vehicle in which two brothers of the perpetrator of the most recent attack in Tel Aviv were riding.

An Israeli security source said security forces had asked the perpetrator’s father to surrender, threatening to raid Jenin’s camp otherwise.

Abu Muadh, a spokesman for the Jenin militant group, said in a statement that the camp was “on high alert” and called on local fighters to “mobilize” to “face an invasion” by Israeli forces.

The mosques of the area called on the residents to stay in their homes, to avoid walking on the streets in this densely populated camp.

Elsewhere in the West Bank, near Bethlehem, a 47-year-old widow and mother of six, who was “suspiciously” targeting Israeli soldiers but did not stop firing “warning shots”, succumbed to her injuries after being shot. the Israeli army and the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

Late last night in al-Khader, near Bethlehem, the Israeli army said it had opened fire on a Palestinian who was “throwing Molotov cocktails” on a street. Mohammed Gnaim, 21, was killed, the Palestinian Ministry of Health and local sources confirmed.

In Hebron, in the southern part of the West Bank, Israeli police said they had killed a Palestinian woman who had stabbed and “slightly” injured a police officer.

There have been four attacks in Israel since March 22, the first two by Israeli Arabs linked to the Islamic State and the second two by Palestinians of Jenin descent. A total of 14 people were killed in these attacks.

According to an AFP report, 13 Palestinians, including perpetrators of the attacks, have been killed in violence since March 22.
